Water Safety

Water Safety is an issue people recently started thinking more about after the tragic accident in Cambodia. People are asking what happened exactly and how. Coaches, Captains, Teams and also Organizers of course want to know how to avoid such an incident happening again.Â
While it will be definitely good to analyze and investigate this one incident, it is within the nature of accidents to happen totally unexpected and seldom repeating in the same way as they have occurred already, I think it makes sense not focussing on one issue only rather than giving the topic of safety a more wider thought about what else could happen.
Knowing that this might bring up some frightening scenarios, the aim of this site is not to scare off people but simply to create an awareness about existing dangers. The pure knowledge of them is already a big step forward in avoiding accidents.
When i was an apprentice as a mechanic in Germany, the very first thing I was taught was the saying: “Gefahr erkannt, Gefahr gebannt”, meaning as much as a “recognized danger is banned danger”. The second thing I had to do was to study for a week long all the accident avoidance rules of the Craftsmen Association. - Well, and here we go, be honest, how many of you really read the water safety regulations i.e. of the IDBF. True, it’s dry stuff but I think worth reading them. Later on I will put them on this site too, but if you like to read them, meanwhile please find them in the documents available on www.idbf.org.
You can contribute to this site be leaving your comment about what dangers have you experienced or can foresee. Is there anybody out there having knowledge about boat handling on fast going rivers? Don’t hesitate to talk about it, it can help everybody engaged in water sports. Let’s learn together in a positive way. Knowledge doesn’t need to be dry stuff.
